2010 Municipal/School Board Trustee Elections

Monday, October 25, 2010 is Election Day for Municipalities and School Board Trustees in the Province of Ontario. For the Town of Carleton Place the following positions may be available to vote for depending upon the nominations papers that are filed on or before Nomination Day.

-Mayor (1 position)
-Deputy Mayor (1 position)
-Councillor (5 positions)
-School Board Trustee (English Public and English Separate)
-School Board Trustee (French Public and French Separate)
 
Am I eligible to vote?
A person is entitled to be an elector at an election held in a local municipality, if on Voting Day, he or she is:
· a Canadian citizen
· at least 18 years of age
· resides within the municipality or an owner or tenant of land there, or the spouse of such owner or tenant and is not otherwise prohibited from voting.
 
As of September 7, 2010 the Voter's List will be available to view in the Clerk's Office of the Town Hall or at the Public Library in order to determine if your name is on the Voter's List. If your name is not on the list and you are eligible to vote, you may apply to the Clerk to have your name added to the Voter's List either before Voting Day or on Voting Day at the appropriate voting station.

Who can be a candidate?
Any eligible elector may be a candidate for the position of Mayor, Deputy Mayor or Councillor. School Board Trustees must be eligible electors of their own school board.

When and where can I file a nomination paper for the position of Mayor, Deputy Mayor or Councillor?
An eligible elector may file a nomination paper with the Clerk during regular office hours when the Clerk's Office is open from January 4, 2010 until September 9, 2010. On September 10, 2010, which is Nomination Day, a nomination paper may be filed in the Clerk's Office from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The onus is on the candidate to file a complete nomination paper with the correct fee. The fee for the position of Mayor is $200.00 payable in cash, certified cheque or money order. The fee for the position of Deputy Mayor or Councillor is $100.00 payable to the Town of Carleton Place.
 
Nomination Papers for School Board Trustees
Nomination papers for the English Public School Board and English Separate School Board must be filed with the Clerk of the Town of Mississippi Mills. Please contact Mrs. Cindy Halcrow, Clerk of the Town of Mississippi Mills at 256-2064 for further details.

For information on the filing of nomination papers for the French Separate or the French Public School Board, please contact Mr. D. Rogers, Clerk of The Town of Carleton Place at 257-6211. Nomination papers for these two school boards are filed in the Municipality of North Grenville and the Town of Petawawa respectively.

Advance Voting Stations
For the election, there will be two advance voting stations as follows:
Saturday, October 16, 2010 and Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at the Carleton Place Community Centre, 75 Neelin Street, Carleton Place, Ontario, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Election Day and Voting Stations
Election Day this year will be held on Monday, October 25, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at all regular voting stations which are:
Carambeck School - for all electors within the Town north of the Mississippi River except the residents of Stoneridge Manor
Caldwell Street School - for all electors west of Bridge Street and west of Franktown Road except the residents of Riverview Seniors Residence and Carleton Place Manor, Carleton Place
Community Centre - for all electors east of Bridge Street and east of Franktown Road except the residents of Waterside Viva Retirement Community.
Voting Stations will be located at Carleton Place Manor, Stoneridge Manor, Riverview Seniors Residence and Waterside Viva Retirement Community for the residents only. Voting times at these four facilities will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and are for the residents of the facility only.
 
Voter's List
Should you wish to determine if your name is on the Voter's List, please contact the Clerk on or after Tuesday, September 7, 2010. If you determine that your name is not on the list and you qualify as an elector, your name may be added to the Voter's List by completing an Addition to the Voter's List Form during regular office hours at the Town Hall on or after September 7, 2010 and up until the close of voting on Election Day at the appropriate Voting Station.
 
Accessibility
All election workers for the 2010 Municipal/School Board Trustee Election will receive accessible customer service training. All voting stations will also be wheelchair accessible for this election. Magnifying sheets and ballot envelopes will be available to assist those with a vision disability. Should you have a special accessibility need, please contact the Clerk prior to voting day in order to accommodate your request as much as possible.

New Voting Procedure for the 2010
New for the 2010 Municipal/School Board Trustee Election is the requirement to produce acceptable original identification in order to vote. In terms of identification, one option will be to present a document which contains your name, qualifying address and signature.

The following is a list of acceptable original identification regarding Option No. 1:

-An Ontario Driver's License
-An Ontario Health Card (with photo)
-An Ontario motor vehicle permit (plate portion)
-A cancelled personalized cheque
-A mortgage, lease or rental agreement
-An insurance policy
-A loan or agreement from a financial institution
-A document issued by a Court in Ontario
-A document from the Government of Canada, Ontario or municipality or from such agency
-A document from a Band Council in Ontario

Other specific documentation is also acceptable. A second option available to electors in terms of identification is to present an original document which shows a person's name and signature with a second original document which shows a person's name and qualifying address.

If you are unable to produce acceptable identification and your name is on the voter's list, you may still vote by completing an oath in the prescribed form at the appropriate voting station.

Election Results
The results of the 2010 Municipal Election will be released in the Auditorium of the Town Hall as soon as they are available after 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, Monday, October 25, 2010.
