SUMMARY:Be Ready - 72 Hour Preparedness Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As recently as 15 years ago\,  Red Cross Responses to Disasters here in Canada were predominantly helping those who were impacted by local house and apartment fires and the very occasional ice storm and power outage.  More recently\, Red Cross Volunteers find themselves occupied by a dramatic increase in climate-related and other events.  Planning for annual fire and flood seasons that dislocate more and more people\, responding to tornadoes and hurricanes is unprecedented. Deployments across the country are year round. \nIn this course you will learn what steps you can take to prepare for a range of emergencies\, the risks in our community\, the plan you need to make\, and the kit you will need to take of yourself and your family. The more people can take care of themselves for that first 72 hours of a disaster\, the more our first responders\, such as police\, fire\, ambulance\, hydro\, water and road crews\, can focus on helping those who cannot help themselves. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, September 24 from 6-7:30pm for an informative meeting where you’ll learn what you need to prepare for a 72 Hour Emergency. Please email Heidi at hsinnett@carletonplace.ca to register.

SUMMARY:Silent Art Night
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard about the Silent Book Clubs where people meet at a public location\, chat for a few minutes\, and then read in silence for the rest of the evening? We’re doing something just as fun this fall for all those introverts out there! \nGet out of the house and “meet” some new people without the pressure of having to do more than just say hello. Join us on Tuesday\, September 23rd from 6-7:30pm at the library for a night of silent art-ing. Bring along whatever you’re working on—a painting\, your sketchbook\, that blanket you’re crocheting—and do it quietly in a room full of other people who love to create\, but don’t want the pressure of having to make conversation.  Maybe it’ll happen naturally\, but expect to just “art” with us for a bit and then go home. Maybe you’ll meet a new coffee friend\, or maybe you’ll just get out of the house for a while. \nWhatever the reason\, we’d love to see you on Tuesday\, September 23rd.

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 18\, 5-8 p.m. \nMeet us at Town Hall Square Park behind Carleton Place Town Hall.  \nWe are making an important change to this year’s Take Back the Night event on Wednesday\, September 18th. We will still gather at the park behind Carleton Place Town Hall at 5:00 PM for a condensed version of the evening — including the vigil\, speeches\, and our march. \nThe march will head down Bridge Street to Lake Avenue\, where a free bus will be waiting at the Farmers’ Market (departing no later than 6:15 PM). Those not boarding the bus are welcome to continue marching back to the park. \nThe bus will take participants to Parliament Hill\, where we will join allies in showing the federal government how much support women have — and how vital it is to protect the services and programs women across Canada rely on. The proposed 80% cut to wage funding will have serious impacts on women’s organizations across the country and the communities they serve. RESERVE YOUR SEAT ON THE BUS HERE.  \nRegardless if you are coming on the bus or not\, we want a big turnout this year for the march and the trip to Parliament Hill. Between what’s happening in the U.S.\, the Hockey Canada trial\, increased rates of intimate partner violence across Lanark County\, Ottawa\, and the nation — and the proposed wage cuts — women are in a precarious position both here in Canada and around the world. We want our community to show up in solidarity with women and girls everywhere. \nDress Code: We encourage everyone\, whether joining us at Parliament Hill or not\, to wear LCIHCS swag or purple. LCIHCS t-shirts will be half price for those going on the bus\, and swag will be available for sale at As Good As New during the week leading up to the event. \nThe bus is free — and we want as many people as possible to join us in Carleton Place or meet us in Ottawa. \nSince 2006\, Carleton Place has been host to one of the most well-attended rural Take Back the Night Marches in Canada. Even on the soggiest of nights\, local residents turn out with their banners and noise-makers in record numbers. All to demand that a woman’s right to walk our streets safely be upheld. \nTake Back the Night is about women’s right to be free of violence and to walk without fear. \n

SUMMARY:Reading Dragon Party
DESCRIPTION:We are launching our first ever Reading Dragons program at the Carleton Place Public Library! Join us to help promote reading for kids of all ages and build your own collection of mythical creature cards! \nJoin us on Wednesday\, September 10th\, 2025\, at 6:00 PM for a Dragon Party and the official launch of the program! There will be games\, activities\, prizes\, and more! \nHow does Reading Dragons and Friends work?  \nReading Dragons and Friends are collectible playable cards featuring mythical creatures like dragons\, unicorns\, griffins\, and more. \nChildren track the time they spend reading in 30-minute increments to earn cards – using their reading tracker to track the time spent reading. After completing four 30-minute reading periods\, they can come to the library to collect a family of Reading Dragons and Friends. \nAnyone can collect up to four dragon families a month but can only collect a maximum of two dragon families per visit to the library. \nHow do we start?  \nIf you are unable to attend our Dragon Party launch event on September 10th\, you can start collecting Reading Dragons and Friends cards by asking about the program at the front desk! \nReading Dragons and Friends is a reading incentive program developed the Dover Public Library in 2019 – it is used by over 400 libraries across the globe and has helped foster a love for reading in thousands of children worldwide. \nPlease email Julia with any questions at jhawkins@carletonplace.ca

SUMMARY:Queer Sphere Junk Journaling
DESCRIPTION:This summer was a blast with our regular teen Queer Sphere programs so we’re looking forward to getting back into our school-year schedule. Teens aged 12-16 are welcome to join us on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 3-4:30pm for a fun craft and conversation. \nWednesday\, September 10th will be all about junk journaling—a group favourite that will set the intention for your school year and give you some visual goals. \nNo need to register or bring anything except an open mind and willingness to accept everyone into the group. We are inclusive and supportive\, so even if group activities aren’t your favourite\, you’ll find something to enjoy in this fun session. \nSee you in September!
