Winter Parking Changes

This is to inform you of important, upcoming changes to overnight winter parking restrictions for the 2019/2020 season.

The implementation of the system used for the past seven (7) years, has led to increasing safety concerns from the public of narrow road surfaces due to vehicles being parked on streets during snow removal operations.

Most Eastern Ontario communities (urban and rural) are using a seasonal overnight ban system and the Town of Carleton Place will be moving to this system as well. There are a number of reasons why this decision was made, the primary reason being providing conditions which contribute to safety on our roadways. Operational efficiency and limited staff resources, from both Public Works and Bylaw, were also contributing factors.

Starting November 15th, 2019 through to April 1st, 2020, overnight on-street parking will be strictly prohibited between the hours of 12:00 a.m and 7:00 a.m, regardless of weather conditions, to allow for thorough and efficient snow removal operations.

The Town has a responsibility to provide safe roadways for residents in the community and to maintain our streets in accordance with Provincial Minimum Maintenance Standards. By reverting back to the system we previously used pre-2011, we can ensure a more efficient and thorough snow plowing and removal operations. This will, in turn, make the roads and sidewalks in Town safer for the public to use.

While there will be a grace period to allow residents to adjust to the new system, starting January 1st, 2020, vehicles parked in violation of the ban will ticketed and towed to the Public Library parking lot at 101 Beckwith Street.

We appreciate your support during this transition period. If you have any questions, please contact the Public Works Department at 613-257-2253.
