Council was pleased to attend a media event yesterday afternoon announcing the provincial approval to expand the Ottawa Valley Family Health Team (OVFHT) to Carleton Place, also servicing the residents of Beckwith, and with that approval, the development of the Carleton Place Regional Health Hub which will see 14 local family physicians under one (1) roof and offer residents access to OVFHT's specialized programming and other interprofessional healthcare services such as psychiatrists, occupational health, diabetes support, diagnostic imaging, physiotherapy, pharmacy, etc.. Having an allied health professional team in Carleton Place will ensure residents get preventative and primary care to keep them as healthy as possible for a longer period of time, will divert individuals from using the Emergency Department unnecessarily and also ensure we have the resources to support the recruitment of new primary care physicians.
This project has been a collaborative effort between the Physicians, M+H Properties Group (the developer), the OVFHT, Carleton Place and Beckwith with all partners offering their vision and expertise as well as a financial investment to make this a reality.
Council and staff have been working diligently behind the scenes with our partners for the past 18 months in order to get to this point including working with a local developer to create this healthcare facility in Carleton Place. In May 2022, the Ottawa Valley Family Health Team (OVFHT) submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Health for the expansion project. In January of this year, Council and staff made a delegation to the Honourable Sylvia Jones, Provincial Minister of Health at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) conference to request funding to support the expansion of the health team.
