Building Department Hires New Staff

The Corporation of the Town of Carleton Place is pleased to announce that Lennox Smith has been hired as the Town’s new Chief Building Official and Dave Norton has been hired as our new Building Inspector/Plans Examiner. Both have settled into their positions at Town Hall and have already started working with residents and developers in the community.

“The appointment of Mr. Smith and Mr. Norton will give our Building Department the support and stability it needs to keep up with the unprecedented residential and commercial growth our community has seen, and will continue to see in the coming years,” says Doug Black, Mayor.

The Building Department has many critical responsibilities. What the general public is most likely familiar with is their responsibility for the inspection of construction projects at various stages to ensure compliance with the drawings, plans and specifications which are certified by the Chief Building Official. They ensure general conformance with the Building Code Act, the Ontario Building Code and related municipal by-laws.

They are available by appointment to answer enquiries regarding various regulations, policies and procedures to architects, engineers, designers, constructors, and the public. They also review building plans at the counter in the Town Hall to ensure that the appropriate information is submitted, including applicable development charges and permit fees, to allow for the processing of the application.

“I am pleased to welcome Len and Dave to the staff team in Carleton Place and just in time for the busy construction season this year,” says Diane Smithson, Chief Administrative Officer.
