Ice Storm – Message from Mayor Toby Randell

It’s been a long couple of days, but I believe the vast majority of Carleton Place residents now have their power restored. Hydro One crews have been out in the community working around the clock to get everyone back up and running and I can’t thank them enough for their efforts.

Town staff have put in many long hours of clean up to get our trails, parks, and roads opened up to ensure they were safe for our residents. They have been manning the Arena so our residents as well as our neighbours in Beckwith who experienced a prolonged outage could charge their devices and shower. A big thank you to Public Works and Parks and Recreation for your hard work on a holiday weekend.

Staff at both the Carleton Place Public Library and Carambeck Community Centre altered hours and opened their doors to allow residents the opportunity to warm up, charge their devices and use the Wi-Fi.

The Carleton Place Fire Department received a tonne of calls locally and in our neighbouring municipalities and, as they always do, offered assistance and reassurance. Chief Meunier is the head of our local Emergency Management Control Group and even before the storm started, he was rallying everyone behind the scenes to make sure we were prepared, responding swiftly once the storm hit, and communicating with our residents every step of the way.

Many of our local businesses stepped up during the outage and went above and beyond to make sure the people in the community were taken care of. Some of those businesses were under a lot of stress being the only ones open in the community and I have to say I heard more stories of grace and kindness and patience than I did of negativity.

For anyone who is still without power, the Arena is open again today until 7:00 p.m. Feel free to reach out to me personally with any concerns you may have about your prolonged outage. I can be reached by email at trandell@carletonplace.ca.

Lastly, I want to thank you the citizens of Carleton Place, for your patience, generosity in helping your neighbours and community spirit. I’ve heard countless stories of people assisting each other with clean up, sharing of materials, and inviting neighbours into your houses from in town and our neighbouring communities of Beckwith and Ramsay. It’s times like these when our community shows what it’s made of and reminds me how truly terrific we are and can be. I am proud to work with our staff and council to help the town, because when the chips are down our community always steps up! Thank you, Carleton Place, and have a great Easter weekend!
