Extended Producer Responsibility

Starting July 1st, 2023, the Province of Ontario will begin the transition to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the Town of Carleton Place is just one of several communities to be the first to transition to the new EPR Program.

Today we would like to introduce our residents to new recycling bins and signage that will be available in our municipal indoor public spaces.  Locations such as the Arena, Carambeck Community Centre, etc., will all be equipped with new bins provided to the Town of Carleton Place free of charge by the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association (CBCRA).

The CBCRA has also provided the Town with signage at each location to assist residents with recycling containers and cartons correctly.

The CBCRA was founded in 2010 and is a not-for-profit, industry-funded organization whose members include beverage brand owners and distributors. The CBCRA has implemented and operates the Recycle Everywhere program, which gives consumers a cost-effective and convenient way to recycle empty beverage containers and cartons when at work or play. By recycling your beverage containers, you are making a difference by reducing the amount of recyclable containers and cartons going to landfills, reducing the amount of litter within our community, and giving life to your old containers and cartons when they are recycled into new bottles, cans, even activewear. The possibilities are endless!

By recycling beverage containers into new products and materials, it conserves our valuable natural resources, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and saves the costly energy required to process new materials and products.  Programs such as the CBCRA are critical to achieving the government-mandated target to recover 75% of beverage containers being sold in the province of Ontario by 2026. Carleton Place residents can help achieve this goal by not only using the new bins at our indoor public spaces but also your recycling containers and cartons at home.

Recycling is easy as 1-2-3!

  1. Know what to recycle - Recycle empty plastic and glass bottles, beverage cartons, juice boxes, and aluminum cans.
  2. No food waste – Use the Recycle Everywhere bins for empty beverage containers.  Please do not place non-recyclable takeout cups or soiled food containers into the recycling.  This contamination renders the material in the bins as waste and cannot be recycled. Please place those items in the adjacent waste receptacle.
  3. Make sure it’s empty – Please empty out any liquid before you recycle your beverage containers to prevent contaminating the material in the bins.

The Recycle Everywhere Ambassadors will also be attending events in Carleton Place and across Ontario to increase awareness and communicate the importance of keeping these materials out of landfills.  If you would like the Recycle Everywhere Ambassadors to attend your community event, please reach out to the Public Works Department or contact the CBCRA directly.
