Proclamation: National Indigenous History Month & National Indigenous Peoples Day - June 2023

Whereas June commemorates National Indigenous History Month in Canada as an opportunity to learn and acknowledge the rich history and contributions, and resiliency and diversity of Indigenous people across the country; and

Whereas June 21 is recognized as National Indigenous Peoples Day, which recognizes the diverse cultures, languages, spiritual beliefs, and experiences of Indigenous Peoples, and the County recognizes and celebrates the heritage and ongoing accomplishments of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people across Turtle Island; and

Whereas the Town of Carleton Place recognizes that the Algonquin and Anishinabewaki Nations – on whose territory Carleton Place is located – are the collective stewards and caretakers of these lands and waters in perpetuity, and that they continue to maintain this responsibility to ensure their health and integrity for generations to come; and

Whereas Carleton Place strives to be an inclusive community and encourages all residents to reflect, learn, and take action in a meaningful way towards reconciliation in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples;

Now Therefore Be It Resolved That I, Mayor Toby Randell, on behalf of Carleton Place Council, do hereby proclaim the month of June 2023 as National Indigenous History Month and the date of June 21, 2023, as National Indigenous Peoples Day in Carleton Place.”
