COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

Consent Items

The following consent items of note from the January 30th, 2024, Committee of the Whole meeting were approved:

  • Carleton Place Fire Department and Municipal Law Enforcement 2023 4th Quarter Activity Report – Received as information.
  • Miller’s Crossing Park and Coleman Central Park – Council supported proceeding with the amended park concept plans for the Miller’s Crossing and Coleman Central Parks and instructed Staff to proceed to tender the projects to allow completion as early as possible in 2024.

By-laws

The following By-Laws of note were read and passed:

  • By-law No. 04-2024 - To Appoint Justin L'Esperance as a Municipal Law Enforcement Officer
  • By-law No. 05-2024 - To Appoint Megan Cullen as a Municipal Law Enforcement Officer

Dates of Significance

Mayor Randell noted the following dates of significance during this evening’s Council meeting:

  • February 20th – Heritage Day
  • February 19th to 25th – Local Heritage Week
  • February 28th – Pink Shirt Day

Delegations/Presentations

  • Development Permit Application Statutory Public Meeting - McNeely Landing Subdivision – A Public Meeting was held to consider a proposed Amendment to the Development Permit By-law 15-2015. The purpose of the amendment is to change the land use designations of the lands identified as the “McNeely Landing Subdivision” from “Residential” to “Residential - Special Exception 1”, “Parks/Open Space” (Blocks 217 and 219 only) and “Institutional” (Block 218 only). The amendment also introduces a neighbourhood-specific “Building Inventory” (Section 13) and “Design Guidelines” (Section 14.3) unique to this subdivision. The purpose of the “Residential Special Exception” provision is to establish performance standards (setbacks) unique to the design and fit of the design-built dwellings.
  • Official Plan Amendment Statutory Public Meeting - Public Meetings for Subdivisions – A Public Meeting was held to receive resident feedback on an Official Plan Amendment to make changes to Policy 6.5 of the Official Plan to adopt “alternative measures” in accordance with Section 51(19.3.1) of the Planning Act. The alternative measures are intended to provide a local process for considering community input as it pertains to Subdivision Applications. This process is supplemental to the subdivision review process administered by the County of Lanark in accordance with the Planning Act.

The next regularly scheduled Council and Committee of the Whole meetings will be on Tuesday, March 5th, 2024, commencing at 6:00 p.m.

 

PROVINCIAL NEWS

Seniors Community Grant Program Applications Now Open - Community organizations can apply for funding for initiatives benefiting Ontarians aged 55+

Applications are now open for the Ontario Seniors Community Grant Program. The seniors grants support local, not-for-profit community groups and organizations to deliver programs and learning opportunities for Ontarians aged 55+.

Every year, the Ontario government provides hundreds of Seniors Community Grants ranging from $1,000 to $25,000 each. This funding allows community groups across the province to offer a wide variety of activities that help seniors to live independently, ensure their safety and security, connect them to their community, avoid isolation and help them achieve greater financial security and social connections.

Activities and services supported by the program include:

  • Fitness and nutrition classes to keep adults aged 55+ active, healthy, and socially connected to their communities.
  • Opportunities for community engagement, such as book club gatherings and technology training seminars, to reduce social isolation and increase volunteerism.
  • Increasing access to information through initiatives such as free lectures and supports for health prevention and promotion.

Applications for 2024-25 are open now until March 28th, 2024. Community organizations interested in applying can visit Ontario.ca/getfunding for more information.

Lanark County Food Bank – Top Three Wish List Items

The Lanark County Food Bank’s inventory is low and in need of the following three (3) items:

  • Ramen Noodles
  • Sardines
  • Mayonnaise

You can drop off your food donations at 84 Mill Street in Carleton Place on Mondays or Wednesdays between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, or call 613-257-8546 to set up a drop-off time.
