Environment Canada has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area, beginning this afternoon with total snowfall amounts of 10 to 15cm, with a few hours of freezing rain and ice pellets. - https://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/on-118_metric_e.html
The Public Works Department will be working around the clock to clear municipal roadways with a priority focus on arterial roads. There is a map on our website that shows which roads are arterial vs collector - https://carletonplace.ca/.../CP-Road-Classifications.pdf - We ask for your patience as the crew will be doing their best under extreme conditions.
Overnight Winter Parking – As a reminder, from November 15th through to April 1st, overnight on-street parking is strictly prohibited between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., regardless of weather conditions, to allow for thorough and efficient winter maintenance operations. The Town has a legal responsibility to provide safe roadways for our community and to maintain our streets and sidewalks in accordance with Provincial Minimum Maintenance Standards. Vehicles parked in violation of the ban will be ticketed and towed to the Public Library parking lot at 101 Beckwith Street.
There are seven (7) areas in Town that can be used as overnight parking areas from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m.:
1. 10 spaces at the east end of the Riverside Park parking lot at the end of John Street.
2. Approximately eight (
spots in the gravel parking lot for Carleton Junction on Coleman Street.
3. Approximately 10 to 12 spaces in the gravel area on Cavanagh Road next to the tower and stormwater pond.
4. Approximately six (6) spaces in the temporary gravel area at the south end of McNeely Avenue by the trail.
5. Approximately 10 to 12 spaces in the Centennial Park Parking Lot on Joseph Street.
6. Carleton Place Public Library parking lot – nine (9) signed spaces adjacent to Judson Street
7. Southerly end of Power Street - Municipal gravel parking lot in its entirety
All vehicles parked in the designated overnight areas MUST be removed by 11:00 a.m. the following day at the latest to allow for snow removal or risk being ticketed and towed to the Carleton Place Public Library Parking Lot at 101 Beckwith Street.
Avoid Pushing Snow onto the Roadway – We would like to remind residents that pushing or shoveling snow onto the roadway is not permitted.
Driving Near Snowplows – A few things to consider when you see snowplows on the road:
• Stay back from working snowplows and other winter maintenance vehicles.
• Never pass a working snowplow – it is very dangerous for you and the plow driver. Sightlines and visibility can be significantly reduced by blowing snow and the ridge of snow that the plow creates.
• Be patient – it takes time to clear the roads after a snowfall. If you’re driving behind a snowplow, wait for it to finish its job.

Adopt a Hydrant - Residents are encouraged to take the following steps to help keep their families and neighbours safe during the winter months:
1. Adopt a Hydrant - While Public Works clears snow from around hydrants as quickly as they can, it can be difficult for them to manage this in a timely manner, particularly in the event of major snow events. Citizens can help by taking the time to clear a hydrant near their home while clearing their driveway.
2. Regularly check to make sure that all vents and intakes for any heating equipment are clear of snow. A blocked vent prevents your heating equipment from operating properly and is one of the most common causes of carbon monoxide poisoning.
3. Limit on-street, day-time parking as much as possible. Until snow has been removed many side streets are much narrower than normal. Vehicles parked across from each other have the potential to prevent emergency vehicles from getting past and could lead to an avoidable tragedy.
