Central Bridge Construction Update – March 17th, 2022

Demolition crews have now completed the removal of the bridge superstructure from abutment to abutment. Members of Council and Staff posed for a photo (see above) with one of the last remaining pieces of the bridge structure after it was removed from the south side.

The next stage of the project will see the removal of approach slabs and portions of the abutments on both the north side and south side of the river.

Crews will begin the rehabilitation of the piers. The initial stage of this work will see a hydraulic shovel equipped with a drill rig set up on barges to access the piers. Once in place, the contractor will drill down into the piers in order to inject grout to increase structural strength. It is anticipated that this process will take several weeks to complete.

Crews will be removing the retaining wall on the northwest corner of the Central Bridge, adjacent to Sinclair Square. The reconstruction of this wall is part of the bridge replacement and will have a decorative surface finish that is consistent with the bridge.
