National Indigenous Peoples Day

WHEREAS June 21 is recognized across Canada as National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to honour and celebrate the heritage, cultures, resilience, and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples; and

WHEREAS this date, chosen to coincide with the summer solstice, holds spiritual and cultural significance for many Indigenous communities and provides an opportunity to reflect on the enduring presence and knowledge of Indigenous Peoples across these lands; and

WHEREAS the Town of Carleton Place is situated on the unceded traditional territory of the Algonquin Anishinabe Nation, whose stewardship of this land predates Confederation and continues today; and

WHEREAS National Indigenous Peoples Day invites all Canadians to deepen their understanding of Indigenous histories, both past and present, and to participate in the ongoing journey toward reconciliation, equity, and mutual respect;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Toby Randell, Mayor of the Town of Carleton Place, do hereby proclaim June 21, 2025, as National Indigenous Peoples Day in the Town of Carleton Place.

I encourage all residents to take part in events, ceremonies, and learning opportunities that honour Indigenous Peoples and to reflect on how we can continue to build respectful relationships rooted in understanding, inclusion, and truth.
