National Indigenous Peoples Day

WHEREAS the Town of Carleton Place is on traditional, unceded Algonquin First Nation territory of the Anishinaabe Peoples; and

WHEREAS June 21 is commemorated as National Indigenous Peoples Day to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, cultures, languages, contributions, and resiliency and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across the country; and

WHEREAS June 21 is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and a culturally significant time for many Indigenous Peoples; and

WHEREAS Indigenous People have made, and continue to make, invaluable contributions to our community, and contribute greatly to the vibrancy, prosperity, diversity and shared future of our community; and

WHEREAS the Town of Carleton Place strives to foster inclusion, honour diversity, and create a sense of belonging for all residents, and encourages everyone to relearn historical perspectives, to reflect on our collective shared history, and to take purposeful action towards reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples; and

WHEREAS; the Town of Carleton Place is committed to building meaningful relationships, built on mutual trust and respect with First Nations.

THEREFORE I, Toby Randell, Mayor of the Town of Carleton Place, do hereby proclaim the 21st day of June 2024 as National Indigenous Peoples Day in the Town of Carleton Place.
