Environment Canada has issued a Heat Warning – A prolonged heat event will begin today. Dangerously hot and humid conditions are expected through most of the week.
Daytime highs through much of the week are expected to be 30 to 35 degrees Celsius with humidex values of 40 to 45. There will be little relief overnight as lows are expected to be 18 to 23 degrees Celsius with humidex values of 26 to 30.
Extreme heat can affect everyone’s health. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues.
Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle.
Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
Drink plenty of cool liquids before feeling thirsty and keep cool by dressing for the weather and spending more time in a cool place.
You don’t need a reason to “chill” at your library. If you need to cool off, Carleton Place Public Library invites you to spend your day with them. They have comfortable seating, books and puzzles to keep you busy, places to charge your devices, a laptop bar and public computers if you need to get some work done, and more. Everyone is welcome at the library! Hours this week are Monday to Thursday, 10:30am to 8pm, Friday and Saturday 10am to 5:30pm.
The Arena lobby (75 Neelin Street) will also be open this week from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.
Riverside Park and Centennial beaches open today! Lifeguards will be on duty from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Water quality is tested by the Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit. All patrons must respect closure signage. River current could be stronger than expected. Parents/Caregivers—Keep non-swimmers within arms reach at all times.
You can also cool off at the three (3) splash pads:
The Riverside Park Splash Pad is located at 175 John Street.
The Carambeck Community Centre Splash Pad is located at 359 Bridge Street.
The Dunlop Road Park Splash Pad is located at 31 Dunlop Road.
