National Truth and Reconciliation Day (Orange Shirt Day) September 30, 2025

WHEREAS September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a designated day of remembrance to honour victims and survivors of Canada’s Indigenous residential school system; and

WHEREAS it is a day to continue learning about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and our roles and responsibilities towards reconciliation as a community; and

WHEREAS the day is part of a larger conversation on the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization and systemic inequalities that continue to marginalize Indigenous Peoples in Canada; and

WHEREAS Orange Shirt Day is a grassroots movement also observed annually on September 30th to acknowledge the profound harm caused by the residential school system to Indigenous children, families, and communities across Canada; and

WHEREAS the origin of Orange Shirt Day stems from the experience of Phyllis Webstad, whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at a residential school, symbolizing the stripping away of Indigenous identities and cultures;

WHEREAS the Town of Carleton Place recognizes the importance of reflecting on this history to foster understanding and support for our Indigenous community members;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Toby Randell, Mayor of the Town of Carleton Place, do hereby proclaim September 30, 2025, as National Truth and Reconciliation Day and Orange Shirt Day in Carleton Place.

I encourage all residents to wear orange on this day and participate in educational and commemorative activities to honor the survivors and victims of the residential school system, reaffirming our commitment to the principle that every child matters.
