WHEREAS World Down Syndrome Day is observed annually on March 21st, a date chosen to represent the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome; and
WHEREAS individuals with Down syndrome are valued members of our community who enrich our lives through their unique perspectives, talents, and contributions; and
WHEREAS World Down Syndrome Day promotes awareness, acceptance, and inclusion for people with Down syndrome, celebrating their abilities and achievements while advocating for their rights, dignity, and full participation in society; and
WHEREAS the Town of Carleton Place is committed to fostering an inclusive community where all individuals, regardless of ability, are welcomed, supported, and empowered to thrive;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Toby Randell, do hereby proclaim March 21, 2026 as World Down Syndrome Day in the Town of Carleton Place, and encourage all residents to celebrate the contributions of individuals with Down syndrome, promote understanding and acceptance, and work together to build a more inclusive and accessible community for all.
