Vimy Ridge Day – April 9, 2026

WHEREAS on April 9, 1917, Canadian forces achieved a remarkable victory at the Battle of Vimy Ridge during the First World War, marking a pivotal moment in our nation’s military history; and

WHEREAS all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together for the first time at Vimy Ridge, demonstrating the strength, courage, and unity that would come to define Canada as a nation; and

WHEREAS the battle came at a tremendous cost, approximately 3,598 Canadians were killed and over 7,000 were wounded.  Their sacrifice secured not only a strategic military victory but also a sense of national identity and pride; and

WHEREAS Vimy Ridge stands as a symbol of Canadian valour, perseverance, and the profound cost of war, reminding us of our responsibility to honour those who served and to work toward lasting peace;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Toby Randell, do hereby proclaim April 9, 2026, as Vimy Ridge Day in the Town of Carleton Place.

I encourage all residents to take time on April 9th to remember the Canadian soldiers who fought at Vimy Ridge, reflect on their extraordinary sacrifice, and commit ourselves to preserving the peace and freedom they fought to defend.

Dated at the Town of Carleton Place

This 24th day of March 2026.
